By Mark MacDougall:
“It has been recognized for a long time that there has been a need for some means of showing appreciation of the Society for outstanding achievement, and there was finally developed an
Achievement Medal. Our own Dr. Fred Davis made the fuchsia design on this medal, and of course there was no question but that Medal Number One should go to Miss Alice Eastwood, and it was presented to
her by the Board of Directors and her friends on the occasion of her 89th birthday early this year. It is planned to award the medal from time to time for outstanding performance in the affairs of the Society.

“The striking of ten “Fuchsia Society Achievement Medals”
designed by Dr. Fred B. Davis was authorized by the board, and the first medal was appropriately
awarded to Miss Alice Eastwood at the Annual Administrative Meeting in January 1948.”
The bronze medals were made by Gustave Niederholzer Jewelry Company of San Francisco. Mr Gustave Niederholzer, Jr. succeeded his father in the firm. Most, if not all of the early medals were individually engraved.
