CRESCENT CITY BRANCH
FAIR SHOW AND SALE 2008
By Don Helsel

The Crescent City branch of AFS once again hosted a Fuchsia Show and Fuchsia Plant Sale at the Del Norte County Fair from July 31 through August 3, 2008. The highlight of the event, of course, was the fuchsia show on Thursday, Judged by Ed Salome and Vicki Walworth. Competition was stiff based on an increased number of varieties shown as well as an increased level of participation from our novices. The show filled the room leaving little room for the plant sale area. But then who would complain about that dilemma?

Best of show awards were given as follows:

1st Novice Marie Ball Herb de Jacquez
2nd Novice Virginia Walworth Little Jewel (Standard Tree)
1st Advanced Don Helsel Gay Fandango
2nd Advanced Kathy Beard June Bride

Best Orange Fuchsia:
Kathy Beard Willie Tameras (Standard Tree)

Most show points
Novice Virginia Walworth
Advanced Don Helsel

Perhaps the best part of the show was the high level of participation this year from all members, both in the show which was spectacular and in the plant sale where some members worked double shifts to keep up with the demand for our plants. Surprisingly we had fewer plants left over after the sale than anyone can remember.
