AFS Photography Contest

All American Fuchsia Society members are eligible to enter the AFS Photography Contest. Entrants grant the AFS a non-exclusive license to use their entries for educational and reference purposes. Some photographs will be published on the covers of AFS Bulletins. Contestants should make duplicate copies to keep for their personal use.

 AMERICAN FUCHSIA SOCIETY PHOTO COMPETITION RULES

 NO SLIDES WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS PHOTO CONTEST.


There will be no novice or advanced levels. When there are enough first place winners then the novice and advanced levels may be reinstated.
CLASS A: A fuchsia branch showing a number of open blooms
CLASS B: A close-up showing not more than 3 open blooms, buds and foliage
CLASS C: A well-grown fuchsia plant in a container, display or in the ground
CLASS D: Novelty, with the fuchsia subject dominant, include accessories or living things
CLASS F: Fuchsia Fantasy – prints may be enhanced or altered digitally using photo editing software to produce special effects. If a special effect is better displayed in a round or square shape, a 5x5 inch photograph may be submitted.

Prints should be prepared as follows:
Submit two 4x6 inch prints for each entry. Do not write on the back of prints. Fuchsia Fantasy prints may be 4x6 or 5x5.

Mount and mark one print for each entry as follows:
1.     Mount one copy on a 5.5 x 8.5 inch sheet of paper.
2.    On the top front border, write the Class (A, B, C, D or F) and the name of the cultivar (A, B, C & D only). On the back side of the paper write the name of the contestant.
3.    Do NOT write anything on the back of the un-mounted print as it will be used in the AFS Print Library
4.    Individuals may enter a maximum amount of 6 prints in each class.
5.   DEADLINE: September 19, 2008

Judging Categories for A, B, C, & D
1. Composition: A good layout keeps the main object clear and uncluttered and uses lighting to the best effect.
2. Format: The format must be appropriate for the subject, i.e. landscape, (horizontal) portrait, (vertical).
3. Artistry: The picture should have artistic appeal; i.e. good arrangement, focal point.
4. Technical Merit: The entry must do justice to the cultivar or species i.e. blossom perfection, good leaf structure, absence of pests, etc.

Judging for each category is on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best. The contest is judged by photography club judges who are not affiliated with the American Fuchsia Society

Judging for Category F Only
 Judging will be done by popular vote at the Annual AFS Meeting, October 11.

All winning prints will be enlarged to 5x7 and mounted in 8 x 10 mats with labels identifying cultivar, place, class, AFS and photographer’s name.
